Opening Remarks and Forbes Prize Lecture

The 30th biennial Congress of the IIC kicked off this morning in Lima, Peru.
Session 1 - Engaging Communities for Enriched Sustainability 1

The first session of the first day of the Congress brought to the fore some of the most interesting papers on different approaches to heritage-led regeneration driven by community involvement.
Session 2 - Engaging Communities for Enriched Sustainability 2

The second session on the first day consisted of an eclectic mix of projects from Congo to Tibet to Australia and India, each reinforcing the importance of community engagement and showing the need of including anthropological methods to perform integral approaches to heritage.
Session Monday, Virtual Live Hub: Europe

IIC European Virtual Live Hub was opened with a presentation by Julie Bon, head of collections care at the National Library of Scotland and Bo Han, PhD student of the School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society at the Herriot-Watt University in Edinburgh.
Session 3 - Networks and Collaboration
Miriam-Helene Rudd, Katherine Moya Farías and Ana Paula Hirata Tanaka
The second day started out strong with a morning session about various approaches to networking and building global collaborations. We learned about what can be achieved through a combination of virtual, hybrid, and in-person efforts to develop community and share knowledge.
Session: Tuesday, Roundtable: Current state of conservation and education in Latin America (Estado actual de la conservación y educación en América Latina)

On the second day of the congress, a significant roundtable discussion centered on education in Latin America, chaired by Juan Carlos, who facilitated both in-person and online participation.

Session - Monday, Round Table 1: Collaborative and Sustainable Management of Cultural Heritage in Peru

The first roundtable, about collaborative and sustainable management of heritage, was held on Monday 23rd September. Through this panel we explored different projects in Peru and how they engage with numerous communities and organizations and their commitment with sustainability.

IIC Pan-Africa Virtual Live Hub

In the Pan-Africa Virtual Hub, co-chairs Freda Nkirote M’Mbogori (Kenya), Ogechukwu Okpalanozie FIIC (Nigeria), and Oscar Umwamzisiwemuremyi (Rwanda) led the charge in redefining cultural heritage conservation within the context of contemporary challenges.
Session 7 - Greener Treatments and Materials

This second part of the Session theme “Greener Treatments and Materials”, had a diverse range of materials that were examined from finding alternative adhesives for stone conservation to stabilization of archaeological iron and study on protective coatings for silver followed by Outdoor Painted Sculpture conservation.
Session 8 - Adapting Environments in Museums, Archives and Storages 1

Session 8 considered projects from around the world that are looking holistically at what “sustainability” means for museums and their collections, be this environmentally, socially or economically.

Chaired by Juan Carlos Rodriguez, this roundtable gathered leaders from across Latin America to discuss the future of conservation in the region.
Session 9 - Adapting Environments in Museums, Archives and Storages 2

This morning, the 9th session of the conference, titled "Adapting Environments in Museums, Archives, and Storage 2," took place in Lima. The session featured presentations from four speakers, one of whom attended in person, while the others participated via recorded formats.
Session 10 - Sustainable Preventive Conservation Strategies

This session began with Tim Powell and Helen Wilson, representatives of The National Archives of the United Kingdom, who recently shared an exciting initiation to adapt the "Carbon Literacy" toolkit for the archives and special collections sector.

IIC Students and Emerging Scholars Networking Event

As the 2024 Congress drew to a close, students and emerging scholars in heritage conservation gathered for a hybrid session, connecting attendees in Lima with online participants from diverse backgrounds.
Technical Visit - Pedro de Osma Museum

The Pedro de Osma Museum in Lima left a profound impression on us from the moment we entered. Housed in a majestic French-style mansion in the Barranco district, the museum’s architecture astonishes us with its elegance, transporting visitors to another era and immersing them in a world of history and art.
