This position is in the Scientific Research (CL-SR) department of the National Gallery of Art. The primary purpose of the Conservation Scientist position is to support the mission of the CL-SR department by applying scientific expertise to analyze and investigate art-related materials, contribute to the development of conservation strategies, and push the boundaries of scientific knowledge in the context of art preservation. As the Physical Scientist, you will: 

  • · Evaluate requests for analysis from conservators, conservation scientists and curators and recommend appropriate chromatographic/separation techniques and may also include microscopy, imaging, or spectroscopic methods.
  • · Act as lead scientist to undertake analyses, using a variety of skills in chromatographic methods, and as required, microscopy, spectroscopy, or other types of analysis.
  • · Advise staff, contract employees, fellows, and interns in the best practices of use of conservation science equipment and instructs and assist them in the interpretation of resulting data.
  • · Conduct research related to the understanding and preservation of tangible cultural heritage with a focus on the National Gallery's collections and on conservation and treatment methods.
  • · Initiate and collaborate on research projects to develop and improve analytical methods for the identification of artists' materials and to improve the quality of materials and procedures for treating and preserving works of art.
  • · Author technical reports and publishable papers for scientific and humanities audiences, prepare and deliver public lectures and demonstrations.
