The value of physical conferences was reinforced to me a couple of months ago when I managed to be part of the National Museums and Galleries conference in my native Australia. It brought back to all of us that attended the enormous value of professionally meeting in person. Once we had got over the group hugs, that proved to be so necessary and cathartic, we were reminded again of the benefit that comes from interaction with colleagues old and new in the coffee queues and social events and the introductions to people that are part of other discussions that we might not otherwise have met.
