Adapt: leadership and conservation in a time of change

Adapt is a new programme, created by the International Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (IIC) and supported by the Getty Foundation as part of the IIC Congress Scholars programme, 2022-23. Thirty emerging and mid-career leaders in the field of conservation will be selected to participate in this prestigious new international leadership programme.
The programme will run over nine months from September 2022- May 2023. It has been informed by IIC’s highly successful mentoring programme, and will be delivered by leadership specialists who have extensive experience of similar programmes internationally.
Friendship, co-operation and the sharing of knowledge – are at the heart of this programme. We are looking for participants who are open to learning about leadership and sharing experiences and ideas generously with their peers. Adapt aims to create a legacy of new relationships and networks for participants, so you can continue to grow your skills, confidence and learning after the programme finishes.
This programme is made possible with support from the Getty Foundation through its Connecting Professionals / Sharing Expertise initiative.
What does the programme include?
The core online programme all participants are expected to complete includes:
● Attendance at orientation sessions during the IIC Wellington Congress including the Launch Event and programme briefing (5–9 September 2022). A free online registration to the whole Congress is available to every Adapt participant.
● Four masterclasses/ workshops to develop leadership skills and awareness. Each will include a pre-recorded section and printed resources and a live 2hr session. The topics covered will be shaped by participants and could include: Leading Change, Building Confidence, Creating Impact, Leading Beyond Authority, From Operational to Strategic; Creating Successful Grant Applications.
● 1-2-1 session to develop and plan your personal learning with a leadership coach.
● High impact peer-peer support and learning via an Action Learning set. You will join a smaller group of 6-8 peers meeting at regular intervals to apply your leadership learning to real-life challenges.
● Celebration Closing Event including sharing of learning with the wider IIC community.
In addition, there are a number of optional online activities:
● Mentoring: 3 x 60 minute sessions with a highly experienced mentor from the IIC network.
● Training in writing for publication and peer review with Taylor and Francis, and IIC Director of Publications Dr Joyce Townsend.
● Invitation to submit a thought leadership paper to be considered for publication in a special issue post Congress 2022 E-Book, ‘Conservation and Change: Response, Adaptation and Leadership’.
● Networking and ‘Fellowship Pathway’ event hosted by IIC Chair of Fellowships Committee.
Stipend and grants to support your attendance
All participants will receive a £200 Stipend.
Digital Access Grants of £100 GBP will also be provided to support digital/online connectivity and can be used to purchase IT equipment, headsets etc. that would facilitate participation in the programme.
A professional certificate of participation will be awarded to everyone who completes the course. All sessions will be run in English, with live automatic captions. Printed materials will be provided in English with resources translated into a number of other languages to support partipcation.
What is the commitment?
You will be learning as much from one another, as from external experts and so it is critical that you are able to commit to attending all live sessions in the core programme. The live programme amounts to around 36 hrs over a nine-month period. This translates to a commitment of around 3 hrs a month for live sessions, with another 1hr a month self-directed study using pre-recorded materials and online resources. There will be on demand recordings of some sessions, but the live elements are a core aspect of the programme and participants are expected to make every effort to attend all sessions in full.
How we will select applicants
To be eligible applicants should be:
● Currently be employed in conservation in either a public or private capacity.
● Have formal or significant informal training in conservation or conservation science and must have been in practice for at least three years since the completion of training.
● Able to commit to participate fully in the programme and attend all sessions listed as core.
● Be based in an emerging economy.
Selection will be made by IIC in conjunction with the Getty Foundation and our criteria are:
● The potential benefit to the applicant’s career.
● The potential benefit and impact to conservation of cultural heritage in their country – eg via education work or support of others working in the field of conservation.
If we receive more applications that we can support then current members of IIC will be given precedence and we will also seek to ensure a wide geographic spread across the participants. Priority will be given to those who have not received a grant before.
Application is not open to those currently in training. Students may apply for support to the Brommelle Memorial Fund which is one of the major funds of IIC, exclusively dedicated to support student attendance at IIC Congresses.

All applicants are required to complete an online form. As well as helping us assess the criteria, the application form also enables you to feed into the design of the programme.
In addition to the application form, we warmly welcome applicants to consider submitting a short video (3 mins length max) or written statement (up to 500 words) of why they should be chosen for this programme - although this is entirely optional.
