Assistant or Associate Professor of Paper Conservation

Position Description
The Institute of Fine Arts of New York University seeks applications for a full-time faculty appointment in Paper Conservation, either as a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, or as Associate Professor with tenure. The start date for the position is September 1, 2024.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence in scholarship and teaching and will hold a terminal conservation degree (PhD, MA, MS, or Advanced Certificate, depending on the program) in any area within paper conservation treatment and technical research, as well as have significant training in art history. The Assistant Professor of Paper Conservation will have at least four years of post-graduate studio experience and a record of adjunct teaching, conference presentations, and publications. At least seven years of post-graduate studio experience and two years of post-graduate teaching experience at the time of appointment are required for the Associate Professorship, as well as a substantial publication record and commitment to continuing research.
Expertise in preventive conservation, with experience of related fields such as the conservation of works on paper from diverse cultural contexts, photographs, or books, is desirable. The appointee will teach four graduate-level courses each academic year, which must include at least one paper conservation treatment course each semester. The remainder will be other treatment courses or lectures, seminars or colloquia for conservation and art history students. As a full-time member of the Institute of Fine Arts faculty, student advisement (including for the art history MA thesis) and active mentoring are required, as are administration and service on Institute committees.
Rank and salary will be dependent upon experience.
In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for the Assistant Professor position is $90,000-$140,000 and the Associate Professor position is $110,000-$150,000. This pay range represents base pay only (for 9 months or for 12 months) and excludes any additional items such as incentives, bonuses, clinical compensation, or other items. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
