The University of Applied Arts Vienna has an opening for the position of

University Professor (m/f/d) in Conservation-Restoration (40 hours per week)

starting from October 1, 2024, for a fixed period of five years, with the possibility of an extension of the contract beyond the fixed period by mutual agreement. The position is based at the Institute of Conservation.

The Institute of Conservation at the University of Applied Arts Vienna is a nationally and internationally renowned competence centre for the preservation and conservation-restoration of artworks and cultural heritage. The four specialisations – conservation of paintings, of objects, of textiles and of stone – are complemented by the Natural Science Laboratory. In addition to conservation-restoration practice, preventive conservation and collection care, the conservation sciences centrally anchored at the institute have high priority. The institute's visibility has increased in recent years, and its profile has been enhanced owing to its engagement in the preservation of cultural heritage on an international scale. The Institute offers two degree programmes; the Diploma Programme in Conservation-Restoration and the Joint Master's Programme in Cultural Heritage Conservation and Management.

Required is a nationally and internationally networked personality with a holistic view of the subject of conservation-restoration, also with a strong connection to conservation science research and conservation-restoration practice, who will further develop the subject in terms of content, open up new subject areas, operate internationally, and successfully lead the Institute into the future. The professorship represents the field of conservation-restoration with a focus on methodically developing conservation-restoration practice, critically and reflectively questioning working methods, and stimulating relevant and future-oriented discourses.

Expected is the willingness to face social challenges such as climate change and sustainability issues, deal with objects in sensitive contexts, address ethical issues, and integrate them into conservation-restoration practice. Also essential is the ability to engage with and contribute to the changes in research and education brought about by artificial intelligence and digitalisation.

Responsibilities:
· The management of the Diploma Programme in Conservation-Restoration in the German language and the Joint Master's Programme in Cultural Heritage Conservation and Management in the English language
· The management of the Institute of Conservation with the four specialisations – conservation of paintings, of objects, of textiles and of stone and the Natural Science Laboratory
· The cooperative structuring, planning, organising, and interlinking of teaching for both degree programmes at the Institute of Conservation as well as doctoral studies
· The management of funded research projects and the active acquisition of third-party funding
· National and international cooperation with subject-relevant institutions and participation in subject-specific committees
· Taking on organisational tasks, both in university self-administration and in matters relating to study operations

Requirements:
· Doctorate/PhD and completed habilitation or equivalent achievement in the field of conservation and restoration or a related subject (e.g. art history, cultural studies)
· Completed university studies in conservation-restoration (diploma or master's degree) and practical experience in conservation-restoration as well as preventive conservation and collection care
· Outstanding research achievements, excellent publications, success in acquiring third-party projects as well as international reputation and experience
· Experience in acquiring, leading, and conducting conservation science, interdisciplinary research and conservation-restoration projects at national and international level
· Experience in research-related and interdisciplinary collaboration with museums, collections, and in the field of monument preservation
· Experience and enthusiasm for excellent teaching and supervision of theses and dissertations as part of doctoral studies
· Leadership experience, cooperative and situational leadership comprehension, teamwork and conflict resolution skills, appreciative communication, strong social competence, empathy, openness, and joy in working with students
· Ability and knowledge to implement new innovative and forward-looking methods in teaching and research
· Excellent German and English language skills in both spoken and written form; courses are conducted in German and English
· Gender competence and intercultural competence
