Artifact analysis using digital image processing techniques first developed for the US planetary program can be of great assistance to the museum scientist in spectroscopic analysis, pattern recognition, feature enhancement, color identification, and statistical information extraction that would not be possible with other techniques. Some of these techniques are illustrated with their results on the Shroud of Turin along with other suggested applications.
