An outline is given of methods used in the past for the restoration of polychromed sculpture. The necessity of interdisciplinary collaboration is stressed. The heterogeneous surface texture in polychromed sculpture poses particular problems. It is pointed out that a polychromed sculpture may not be conceived as the addition of a painting onto a carrier of wood or stone, but should be considered as an individual entity. The colored form which establishes the image of the polychromed sculpture should be preserved. A.A.
