The IIC, in association with the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) has sponsored six students to attend an international conference about mitigating earthquake risk to museums in Turkey.
Entitled Istanbul 2007: Earthquake Protection of Museums, the conference will take place in Istanbul on 4 and 5 June 2007. The students have been drawn from conservation and engineering training courses and will receive a year's membership of either IIC or EERI, as well as financial support to enable them to attend the conference. The three conservation students are Ms. M. Nilufer Kizik, S. Ayse Tuncer and Ahmet Dogukan Cildir and the three engineering students are Gokhan Kesti, Ali Bozer and Emre Duzgun.
The purpose of the conference is to develop an interdisciplinary platform for the exchange of ideas and expertise among participants, culminating in a declaration to be shared between museum and engineering professionals. The delegates will be drawn from museum professionals, conservators, engineers, academics, associations and entities working on earthquake protection of museums and cultural heritage.
"The effort to protect our cultural heritage can be achieved through interdisciplinary collaboration. In this respect the students' contributions to the conference are very important," said Bilgen Sungay, one of the conference organisers.
