By day, Penny Byrne is a freelance ceramics conservator... but by night, she is a maverick artist, creating political sculptures which ironically send up her usual pretty porcelain subjects.

Byrne discovered her talent for subverting twee ceramics while still a conservation student, and has gone on to develop a dual career as ceramics conservator and artist. It is in her latter capacity that she is enjoying a solo exhibition, which opened last week at the Sullivan and Strumpf gallery in Syndey. No matter how wicked an artist she is, however, she is clear that as a conservator she must draw limits, saying, "I won't destroy important decorative art. But the vintage ones, which are poor copies of the original, I think they're just asking for trouble."
