As a way to provide expansive community access to their rare and fragile cultural heritage held in the collections of the Department of Anthropology, National Museum of Natural History (NMNH), Smithsonian Institution (SI), conservators and curators developed an innovative ‘pre-bracketed’ exhibit technique. This exhibition method, which involves sending completely installed display cases, including bracketed objects, has been used for exhibits traveling to museum and cultural centers worldwide. This paper presents the collaborations needed between conservators, curators, exhibit professional and museums; the pitfalls experienced by the conservators; and recommendations for creating ‘pre-bracket’ exhibits in the future.
