Methods for identifying proteins, oils, and resins in paint media by paper chromatography are described. Thus egg tempera, glue (both proteins), drying oils, and resins can be distinguished from each other. The methods are lengthy, and sometimes in the case of proteins not conclusive, and are intended to supplement conventional microanalysis. Examples are given of the analysis of old resins, Chinese and Roman wallpaintings, ancient Egyptian media, and European panel and canvas paintings. (G.T.)
