The National Archives' Collection Care Department supports an ambitious heritage science and conservation research programme that delivers high-quality, archival-sector leading research outcomes. The Senior Conservation Scientist: Preservation and Documentation is part of a team of professionals responsible for the sustainable preservation and documentation of The National Archives' physical collection. The aim of the role is to lead on, and expand our portfolio of environmental management, risk mitigation, documentation and sustainability strategies to meet the requirements of a 21st century archive.

In this role, the placeholder will take an active lead in developing our on-going preservation activities, interpreting and using environmental and collections documentation data to support decision-making and to drive innovation. In collaboration with our Archives Sector Development team and Engagement manager, the placeholder will lead on Collection Care's engagement with the wider sector – archive, heritage and conservation – to provide advice on preservation and data management, and to strengthen The National Archives' leadership role. The placeholder will also be responsible for developing and delivering projects that address Collection Care's documentation and data challenges, increasing our ability to recognise and exploit digital opportunities to enhance our services.

The Senior Conservation Scientist: Preservation and Documentation will manage a team of conservation professionals to deliver discreet projects as well as on-going programmes of preservation and documentation. They will build effective working relationships with colleagues across The National Archives and with a diverse portfolio of communities that we support. The placeholder will disseminate the outcomes of their work with professional and non-academic audiences through, for example, The National Archives' website, peer-reviewed publications, webinars, workshops or conferences.

The National Archives are looking for a highly motivated individual with preservation and environmental management expertise and a demonstrable knowledge of data management and documentation to support innovative solutions for the care and conservation of a large archival collection.
