Job Summary
We are seeking a conservation professional with experience in the conservation of archaeological collections and a keen interest in research and education to fill the position of Project Specialist. As a Project Specialist, you will be an integral member of the Getty Conservation Institute’s Collections Department and will contribute to projects focused on the conservation of excavated materials in collections of all sizes and in all settings across cultures and geographic regions.


The Getty Conservation Institute (GCI) works internationally to advance conservation practice in the visual arts—broadly interpreted to include objects, collections, architecture, and sites. The Institute serves the conservation community through scientific research, education and training, field projects, and the dissemination of information. In all its endeavors, the GCI creates and delivers knowledge that contributes to the conservation of the world's cultural heritage.

Major Job Responsibilities
In close collaboration with the department head, establish research priorities and projects focused on the conservation of archaeological collections.
Identify, develop, and conduct research in areas of ethical debate in conservation of archaeological collections.
Develop projects that address new challenges and recognized needs of professionals who are responsible for conservation of archaeological materials.
Work with GCI and Getty colleagues to organize experts’ meetings and establish new collaborations that explore new treatments, stabilization methods, and packing and storage protocols for archaeological collections.
Develop courses, workshops, and other educational activities to engage practitioners who care for collections of excavated materials, including those in museums and temporary storage spaces without environmental controls.
Create professional networks and collaborate with local, regional, and international partners to develop solutions to challenges encountered by conservation professionals.
Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at professional conferences.
Manage and monitor operations for projects and activities, which includes working with multidisciplinary teams to meet deadlines, developing contracts, supervising consultants, and managing deliverables.
Work will be based in our offices at the Getty Center in Los Angeles and will also require frequent international travel.
As part of the GCI Collections department, you will contribute to planning of project goals and the establishment of departmental priorities.
Professional development is encouraged and supported through attendance at specialized training courses and participation in professional meetings and workshops.

Bachelor’s degree in conservation, archaeology, anthropology, science, or a related discipline
Master’s degree in conservation of archaeological materials or equivalent practical conservation experience
Minimum of 5-10 years of international project management experience in conservation

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Experience in the conservation of archaeological collections, preventive conservation, and/or treatment, stabilization, packing, and storing of archaeological objects.
Demonstrate critical thinking regarding the impact of conservation treatments on the study and display of archaeological collections.
Experience with the conservation of metals and inorganic archaeological materials may be an advantage.
Excellent research and writing skills and demonstrated experience authoring reports, articles, and/or peer-reviewed publications.
Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work in interdisciplinary teams.
Adaptable, creative-problem solver, able to prioritize
Good organizational and time management skills.
Fluency in a language in addition to English is valuable in this position. (Spanish may be considered an advantage).
Must be available for frequent international travel.
