Preventive Conservator (Maternity Cover)

Conservation and Collection Care team has 19 members of staff including book, paper and preventive conservators working to preserve, stabilize and improve access to the Bodleian Libraries' collections through preventive activities, conservation treatments and research. The department plays a significant role in supporting the ongoing programmes of digitization, exhibitions, public engagement and teaching. Reporting to the Head of Conservation and Collection Care, the Preventive Conservator will manage preventive conservation operations across the libraries, including the line management of 2 part-time assistant conservators and a group of 5 volunteers. They will allocate work, monitor projects to guarantee that tasks are completed on time and to agreed standards, and ensure that the workload is fairly distributed.
They will provide authoritative advice on preventive conservation issues for Bodleian Libraries’ collections on display, in storage or in transit, and contribute to the management, maintenance and development of Bodleian’s environmental monitoring systems, in liaison with Oxford University Estates and the Bodleian Libraries Facilities Team. This will involve monitoring and reporting on temperature, relative humidity, light, and pests.
The Preventive Conservator will manage the preventive conservation budget in liaison with the Head of Conservation and Collection Care, and be responsible for the purchase, maintenance and calibration of equipment. They will coordinate and carry out salvage operations when necessary, and collection maintenance activities across the Bodleian sites e.g. surveys, and housekeeping.
The Preventive Conservator will also manage the Quarantine Room facility, Weston Library Cold Room for the storage of early photography, and the Walk-in Freezer facility for storage of negatives.
