Working within the Collections Services team, the Paper Conservation Manager will be responsible for the conservation and preservation of Royal Museums Greenwich paper-based collections. You will work in accordance with conservation professional standards and ethical guidelines in order to maintain an excellent standard of collection care.

Royal Museums Greenwich (RMG) is a collection of diverse historical sites. The sites are the National Maritime Museum, Cutty Sark, the Royal Observatory, and the Queen’s House. Each of these sites has a unique identity and a common purpose to serve our communities, through sharing our collections and expertise. We are a place to explore the sea, space, art and history, and our new strategy ‘Charting Our Course’ puts our people at the core of its success.

Key elements of your role will involve supervising the work of the paper conservation team, managing the planning and delivery of a work programme for the Paper Conservation Studio, and leading complex conservation treatments of the archive and library collections and other works on paper. You will manage relationships with the Archive and Library team, as well as the curators of Historic Photographs and Ship Plans, in order to effect excellent care and conservation of these collections. You will also contribute to the development and delivery of the Museum’s public engagement programme, primarily within the Prince Philip Maritime Collection Centre programme.

The successful applicant will need to demonstrate extensive knowledge, experience and practical skills in the conservation of paper-based collections in a gallery, museum, library or archive setting. Strong leadership skills, with experience of managing staff or volunteers is required, as well as experience of coordinating and preparing items for loans and exhibitions. Excellent written and oral communications skills is a must, with an understanding of cultural and political impact in the communication of complex issues.
