The University of Manchester Library (UML) is seeking a book or paper conservator to assist in the preservation and conservation of our outstanding Special Collections of rare books, manuscripts, archives, maps and visual collections.
The UML is one of only five National Research Libraries and the third largest academic library in the UK. Our vast and rich collections (both print and increasingly digital) help us to deliver a world-class library and information service for the University of Manchester. While our primary objective is to meet the learning, research and teaching needs of University members, we are also fully committed to widening access to our services to individual researchers, local schools and others in the regional community.
The UML's Special Collections are among the richest holdings of rare books, manuscripts, archives, maps and visual collections in the world. They span five millennia and include virtual every medium ever used for written communications, from cuneiform clay tablets to email archives. The collections are a superb resource for research, teaching and learning and the Library has a vibrant academic engagement programme. Through the John Rylands Research Institute, we deliver an extensive programme of research on the collections, in collaboration with academic colleagues from the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Manchester.
UML are seeking a book or paper conservator to join our dynamic and highly skilled Collection Care team, to undertake a wide range of preservation and conservation procedures, and to advise and train staff and researchers in the use of library materials. You will have a recognised qualification in book and paper conservation and/or relevant experience of book, paper or preventative conservation; excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to work as part of a team; an ability to deliver high quality work to agreed timetables; and excellent organisational and prioritising skills.

Hours & Place of Work
Normal working hours are 28 hours per week.
This post is based in the John Rylands Library. However all Library employees are required to work at any Library site, as necessary.
All Library staff are required to wear a name badge.
