The Paintings Conservator will work in conjunction with the Director of Conservation to oversee the preservation and restoration of paintings and painted artifacts in the museum collection and associated loans. This position also takes part in all Conservation department activities and initiatives including support of loans, exhibitions, collection installations and rotations, as well as research and public education projects. This position works closely with other museum departments.

Key Responsibilities:
· Design and execute treatments of paintings and painted objects.
· Perform detailed examination of the materials, structure, and condition of paintings assessing deterioration and damage, and potential complications involved in treatment.
· Provide written and photographic documentation for all treatments and research.
· Oversight of painting collection loans.
· Support of the Exhibition Conservator in all exhibitions, collection installations and rotations.
· Frequent collaboration with museum curators, registrars, art handlers, as well as, outside conservation scientists, conservation colleagues, artisan specialists, and associated professionals.
· Supervision of Assistant Conservators, Conservation Technicians, and Conservation Interns.
· Travel in support of exhibitions, loans, continuing education, and research.
· Management of multiple projects simultaneously under tight deadlines.
· Active participation in periodic training sessions, conferences, and professional meetings.
· Familiarity and adherence to the American Institution of Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (AIC) Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Practice and current museum-quality standards.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
· Demonstrated broad conservation knowledge in paintings preservation and restoration.
· Demonstrated familiarity and adherence to conservation ethics as put forth in the American Institute for Conservation (AIC) code of ethics and standard of practice.

Management Preferences:
· Experience with the conservation of Modern and Contemporary artwork.
· Experience in technical art history research, documentation, and writing.
· Prefer experience with a variety of analytical techniques for documentation (UV, IR, Multi-spectral, X-ray, PXRF, etc.).
· Experience in public interaction, public education, presentations, and outreach.
· Excellent communication, interpersonal skills, and team cooperation.
· Demonstrated the ability to work both independently and as part of a conservation team.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Master's degree from a recognized graduate conservation program or the equivalent (four years mixed education and work experience). An additional 10+ years of professional experience in the examination, handling, documentation and conservation treatment of historic paintings, modern paintings, and painted surfaces, preferably in a museum setting. Fluent in spoken and written English
