The National Portrait Gallery houses a unique collection of all forms of portraiture of the people who have made or are currently contributing to British history and culture; the collection is the most comprehensive of its kind in the world. With around 2 million visitors each year prior to temporary closure for the Inspiring People project and a strong national and international presence through touring exhibitions and special projects, the Gallery is one of the country's most important and popular galleries.
International Project: Frame Conservator
£18,600 per annum, based on the full time equivalent of £31,000 per annum.
Part-time, 24 hours per week
Fixed Term Contract for 22 months
The NPG are looking for enthusiastic degree educated candidates with a recognised post-graduate qualification in the conservation of frames or previous experience in frame conservation within a gallery or museum setting. A familiarity with conservation of other media including paintings and paper is desirable to ensure that the post holder is able to work effectively across a range of conservation disciplines. Given that the role involves international couriering of artwork, the successful candidate will need to demonstrate strong communication skills and the ability to work independently.
Excellent organisational and planning skills are vital to this role as you will need to manage project schedules and conflicting deadlines for a range of international exhibitions. Candidates will need to have good working knowledge of a range of software including Microsoft Office, digital photography and image management databases. A thorough understanding of COSHH and Healthy and Safety guidelines is also fundamental.
