Data Specialist – Heritage Science Data Service (HSDS)
Location: The National Gallery, London (hybrid working available)
Contract: 3 years, full-time
Salary: £40215
Closing Date: 23 February 2025
The National Gallery is seeking a Data Specialist to play a key role in the Heritage Science Data Service (HSDS), an initiative to improve access to heritage science data across the UK’s GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums) sector. Part of the RICHeS programme, the HSDS will provide a central platform for managing and sharing heritage science data to support research, conservation, and collaboration.
Key Responsibilities
- Work with project partners to organise and standardise heritage science datasets, ensuring consistency and accessibility.
- Develop and apply metadata templates, data standards, and workflows for structured heritage science documentation.
- Configure and test digital platforms such as ResearchSpace, Arches for Science, and Cordra to demonstrate best practices in digital documentation.
- Showcase how datasets can be prepared for inclusion in HSDS and extracted for new digital research resources.
- Collaborate with GLAM institutions to develop a UK-wide sector catalogue of heritage science data.
- Provide technical guidance, develop training materials, and support wider engagement with the GLAM sector.
What We’re Looking For
- Knowledge of heritage science data and experience in organising and managing complex datasets.
- Familiarity with digital heritage platforms and a strong grasp of FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data principles.
- Experience with metadata standards and linked data within the heritage or research sector.
- Excellent organisational and communication skills, with a collaborative approach to working across institutions.
Important Note
This is not a practical role for the conservation or technical examination of paintings. Instead, it focuses on the strategic management and configuration of digital data systems to support heritage science research. The role involves significant engagement with digital platforms and data structures, offering valuable experience for individuals with backgrounds in digital humanities, data management, or heritage science.
