Content and Engagement Specialist – Heritage Science Data Service (HSDS)
Location: The National Gallery, London (hybrid working available)
Contract: 3 years, full-time
Salary: £40,215 per annum
Closing Date: 23 February 2025
The National Gallery is seeking a Content and Engagement Specialist to play a key role in the Heritage Science Data Service (HSDS), an initiative designed to improve access to heritage science data across the UK’s GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums) sector. Part of the RICHeS programme, HSDS aims to provide a central platform for the management and sharing of heritage science data, supporting research, conservation, and collaboration.
This role will lead on engagement with the GLAM sector, ensuring alignment between user needs and the technical development of HSDS. Working closely with the National Gallery’s Data Specialist, you will help develop a sector-wide data catalogue, support testing of digital systems, and coordinate activities that facilitate collaboration and best practice across the heritage science community.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop user scenarios and workflows for heritage science data management and the use of HSDS.
- Engage with GLAM institutions to identify and organise key heritage science data for inclusion in a UK-wide sector catalogue.
- Facilitate and participate in the testing of digital systems such as ResearchSpace, ensuring feedback is provided to technical teams.
- Organise workshops, webinars, and surveys to engage the heritage science community and promote FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data practices.
- Investigate existing digital initiatives in heritage science to identify potential collaborations and ensure best practice.
- Produce a comprehensive report on findings, recommendations, and user engagement strategies.
What We’re Looking For
- Experience in content management, user engagement, or data coordination, ideally within the cultural heritage or conservation sector.
- Strong organisational and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively across institutions and disciplines.
- Knowledge of metadata standards, digital research methods, and heritage science data management.
- A proactive and collaborative approach to problem-solving and stakeholder engagement.
Important Note
This is not a practical role for the conservation or technical examination of paintings. Instead, it focuses on the organisation of heritage science data and its related context, supporting the development and implementation of digital solutions to manage, discuss, and present it. The role will involve significant engagement with future users of the resource. However, it may provide valuable experience for those with a background in conservation or heritage science.
