POSITION SUMMARY
The Conservator, Postwar and Contemporary Glass position is full-time, with the potential for
being hybrid, and reports to the Senior Manager, Collections and Exhibits.
Is responsible for all aspects of the physical care and preservation of the collection of glass and
glass-related objects. Participates in the setting of and supports sustainable strategies for the
Conservation Department and works closely with the Director, Collections and Curatorial Affairs
and the Senior Manager of Collections to achieve key initiatives, define and implement policies,
and maintain professional standards. Working collaboratively with Conservation staff,
Collections Management and Collections Photography staff, shares responsibility for the
physical care of the collection of glass and glass-related objects. Advises on all collections and
gallery projects, exhibitions and storage conditions for the contemporary and postwar glass
collection and objects loaned to or from the Museum for exhibition or study purposes. With
other Conservation staff, oversees interns, trainees, and contract conservators as appropriate.
RESPONSIBILITIES (Essential functions denoted with *)
Conservation
Works with the Collections Management and Conservation staff on all aspects of the care of
glass and glass-related objects in the collection and on loan with a focus on postwar and
contemporary objects.*
Examines potential acquisitions and Museum objects requested for loan to other
institutions, writes condition reports and recommendations.*
Treats objects as needed, documents treatments, and enters treatment reports into the
collections database.*
Has primary responsibility for preventative conservation and environmental monitoring.*
With fellow conservation staff, ensures that the handling and storage of conservation
materials and the use of equipment in the conservation laboratory are in compliance with
relevant federal and state regulations.*
Maintains currency on the latest developments in relevant fields, including glass making
processes and materials, conservation and preventative conservation.*
With fellow conservation staff, provides conservation content for the Museum’s social
media sites and website.
Serves as a resource for visiting artists, scholars and other CMOG initiatives.
Couriers objects as required and/or manages virtual courier services.*
Recommends the safest methods of displaying, mounting, packing, lighting, storing and
handling glass objects, including new acquisitions.*
Provides object handling training.*
Is familiar with and observes the requirements of all Museum standards and the Code of
Ethics and Statement of Practice of the American Institute for Conservation.*
Represents the Museum at domestic and international conferences and professional
meetings through active participation and engagement.
Conducts original research in the field of glass conservation as time permits. Teaches and
disseminates research globally.
Supports technical and material analyses as requested to support technical art history
research. Facilitates object handling for outside researchers as needed.*
Maintains relationships for collaboration with outside scientists and artists.
With fellow conservation staff, provides supervision and guidance of trainees in the
Conservation Department.*
Responds to public and professional inquiries as needed.*
Provides outreach; specifically lectures and lab tours.
General

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Master’s degree or equivalent diploma in conservation.
Minimum five – seven years’ experience as an object conservator, or equivalent training
and experience.
Experience with contemporary art, including objects with glass, mixed media, and timebased media desired.
Experience with preventative conservation and environmental monitoring desired.
Knowledge of Excel, Collections Management and Digital Asset Management systems and
other record-keeping programs.

The work environment is regularly indoors and climate controlled. The employee is frequently
exposed to odors, fumes, or airborne particles. The employee is occasionally exposed to
outdoor not climate-controlled environment, wet/humid conditions (clean objects in a sink),
work near moving parts, high, precarious places, toxic or caustic chemicals, outdoor weather
conditions, risk of electrical shock, and radiation (works with XRF). The noise level in the work
environment is usually quiet.

SALARY RANGE
$88,000 - $90,000
