We are looking for an Assistant Scientist to provide analytical and research support in the Getty Conservation Institute’s Science Department, as part of the Built Heritage Research team, which combines laboratory research and field studies to characterize traditional and modern built heritage materials and to investigate conventional and innovative conservation treatments for such materials. Your work will be based in our laboratories and offices at the Getty Center in Los Angeles.
The Getty Conservation Institute (GCI) works internationally to advance conservation practice in the visual arts—objects, collections, architecture, and sites. The Institute serves the conservation community through scientific research, education and training, field projects, and disseminating information. In all our endeavors, we create and deliver knowledge that contributes to the conservation of the world's cultural heritage.
Major Job Responsibilities
You will initially focus on the analysis of earth and lime-based mortars and earthen substrates, investigating their compositional/mineralogical properties, mechanical performance, and physical response to different environmental conditions.
Contribute to research areas including durability studies in real-world conditions and under accelerated laboratory aging following standard protocols and purposely designed procedures.
Identify and apply appropriate laboratory and field-based analytical techniques, which are available at the GCI, for the characterization of laboratory specimens and samples from heritage sites.
Prioritize your workload, prepare samples, collect, organize, manage, and interpret data, prepare reports, and perform literature reviews.
In collaboration with the Built Heritage Research team, assist with the development of monitoring strategies for the long-term assessment of conservation treatments of built heritage surfaces in real-world conditions.
Contribute your own expertise in the development of new techniques and innovations.
In addition to the Built Heritage Research team, you will also collaborate with scientists from other cultural, scientific, or academic institutions, conservators, practitioners, and heritage site managers.
Present research findings at professional conferences and contribute to the publication of papers in peer-reviewed journals.
As part of the Built Heritage Research team, you will contribute to the short- and medium-term planning of project goals and establishing strategic priorities.
Professional development is encouraged and supported through attendance at specialized training courses and participation in professional meetings and workshops.
Bachelor's degree in materials science, geology, or other natural science is required; Master’s degree preferred.
1-3 years of experience in scientific research is required, preferably in the field of cultural heritage conservation.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Must be able to operate analytical instrumentation including PLM, SEM-EDS, XRD, Raman, Thermal analysis (TGA/DSC).
Hands-on familiarity with samples collection, specimens preparation, surface characterization, and moisture monitoring techniques.
Experience using a range of analytical techniques for the characterization of built heritage materials and the evaluation of conservation treatments both in the lab and in the field is preferred.
Knowledge of and experience with petrographic characterization is strongly desired.
Knowledge of the behavior, main weathering mechanisms associated with built heritage porous materials and related conservation strategies.
Experience working with conservators in conservation science laboratories and in the field is preferred.
Creative problem-solving skills and an openness to learning new skills sets.
Ability to work effectively individually and in a highly collaborative environment.
Demonstrated excellent organizational, data management, prioritization, communication, and writing skills.
