About the Seminar
Adopted at the Nara Conference on Authenticity held in 1994 following Japan’s ratification of the World Heritage Convention, the ‘Nara Document on Authenticity’ has significantly influenced the conservation of cultural heritage across the globe. Recognizing cultural diversity, including specific local characteristics and backgrounds as a value of heritage, the ‘Nara Document’ built upon and extended the philosophy of authenticity declared by the Charter of Venice in1964, which required the rigorous preservation of the original status of heritage. Consequently, the Japanese restoration methods for heritage buildings, especially wooden structure, which faced concerns about meeting the standards of World Heritage inscription, gained international recognition as valid practices. Additionally, the ‘Nara Document’ has been accepted as a way of evaluating not only architectural heritage but also archaeological sites and landscapes, and has increasingly been applied to explain the legitimacy of the various heritage conservation in the non-Western regions, such as Asia and Africa.

Commemorating the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the ‘Nara Document’, this seminar aims to provide an overview of how the concept of ‘authenticity’ promoted by the Document has been understood and practiced in the field of heritage conservation over the past 30 years. Through the cases from Europe, Africa, and Asia, the seminar will explore its impact in various parts of the world.
