The next and newest version of the Modular Cleaning Program! Will it be vaporware? Alpha? Beta? Or the usual, buggy first release? “Welcoming MCP Version 11!”, the seventh lecture in the Practical Science for Conservators series.

There is a lot of new material in version 11.

Chris Stavroudis has incorporated oil-in-water microemulsions, like Professor Piero Baglioni, with modifications by Luke Addington. As part of the modifications, “ultra-concentrated solutions” at 62.5x stock concentration will be debuted. This allows the addition of pH buffers and chelators to the microemulsions without disturbing the formulations. The ultra-concentrates will be used a drop or two at a time rather than the familiar 1mL. One of the surprising advantages of the ultra-concentrated solutions is that they are made up in 10mL quantities rather than the normal 100mL, making the whole kit much more portable.

Going forward, there will be two ways to use the MCP: one using the original 5x stock concentrated solutions, and another using the ultra-concentrated stock system to build the systems you know and love. Both will be supported in all functions of the MCP.

Practical Science for Conservators is an informal, educational, monthly Zoom series on chemistry and scientific fundamentals as applied to conservation. Our sessions begin with short presentations followed by discussion. The goal is to bridge the gap between scientific fundamentals and practical conservation application. Targeting conservators of all skill and education levels, presentations are delivered in a relaxed, informal environment that's a blend of graduate seminar, office hours, and Friday night get- together.

This free series is open to all conservators, conservation scientists, and conservation students. Zoom will open Friday at 5:00pm PDT (8:00pm EDT; 9:00pm Brazil; 1:00am Western European; 2:00am Central European; 10:00am Saturday Australia; noon New Zealand) with presentations starting at 5:10pm PDT.
