This online seminar will review the principles of Polarizing Light Microscopy (PLM) and its use as a fundamental technique for the identification of pigments complementing and sometimes even providing information beyond what can be detected with some instrumental methods. The results of PLM can help date an artifact and elucidate its original appearance, use, and current condition The seminar will be illustrated with practical case studies taken from decorative arts, artifacts, and architecture in the Colonial Williamsburg collection.
