The Young Professionals Forum is a major international digital event, dedicated to growing the skills of young people working in cultural heritage conservation, and helping them to build networks. Based at The Centro Conservazione e Restauro of Venaria, it held its second event virtually on 1 - 2 July 2021.
IIC is delighted to have been among the leading international bodies supporting the event, alongside ICOM and ICCROM. We offered a scholarship scheme which supported 19 emerging professionals to attend, representing nine different countries, including Peru, Indonesia and Mexico. Overall, 100 attendees came from 19 countries, with 24 young professionals based in Italy, Spain, Egypt, France, Brazil, India, Czech Republic, North Macedonia, Mexico, Austria, Poland presenting abstracts - giving truly international representation.
The 2021 event was an opportunity to reflect on practices developed during the pandemic, and the new procedures, skills and tools which emerged to fit with our current needs. There were four thematic sessions, covering restoration ethics, diagnostics, museum professions and history of conservation - each organised in collaboration with international partners.
IIC Executive Director Sarah Stannage said "an important lesson from the last year is that we must continue to promote more equitable access and opportunities for colleagues across the world to participate in our programmes. I was honoured to spend time with the emerging professionals whose presence we supported at the YPF, as part of the Scientific Committee. Also working with YPF, important contributions were put forward to the July meeting of the G20 Ministers of Culture in Rome on sustainable development, disaster risk reduction and climate change mitigation. We are keenly aware that these issues will be central to the whole careers of those entering the profession now, and see our growing work in this area as a crucial responsibility to our younger colleagues."
There was also an Experts Meeting in the days before the forum - a series of one-to-one interviews offering an opportunity for young participants to discuss their professional profile and get advice from top national and international experts. IIC's Executive Director Sarah Stannage was among those offering advice.
