This one day course is aimed at practising conservators who feel that they may benefit from a day refreshing their chemistry background in relation to methods they or others are using in practice or that are referred to in the conservation literature.
The day is divided into 4 sessions of powerpoint lectures plus discussion including exploring/confronting topics previously sent in by participants

Session 1: Understanding modern analytical methods and imaging approaches
a. XRF/EDX: Structure of the atom
b. Spectroscopy & hyperspectral imaging techniques: the electromagnetic spectrum

Session 2: Keeping things under control in the chemical laboratory / conservation studio
a. Acids, bases and pH
b. Chemical equations and calculations

Lunch & discussion – An opportunity to discuss chemical ‘problems’ brought by the participants

Session 3: Solvents and cleaning
a. Interactions of molecules: primary and secondary bonding
b. Relating chemical behaviour to functional groups

Session 4: Varnishes and coatings
