ARA's Section for Preservation and Conservation are pleased to announce their first online series of talks on the subject of parchment and stationery bindings. These will be advertised over the following weeks and will conclude with a Q&A session with our hosts.
To begin, Ann-Marie Miller of Codex Conservation will kick us off with her presentation Make, Mend & Do…The Conservation of 4 Eighteenth-Century Parchment Stationery Bindings on Wednesday 12th August 16:00-17:00 BST over Zoom.
The presentation is an overview of the conservation of four volumes of Wine Accounts from Middle Temple Archive which took place earlier this year. The bindings will be described and placed within their historical context. Following this, the different issues encountered due to variations in their structure and condition will be discussed alongside the ethical considerations. A practical account of the treatment approach is given as well as an evaluation of the results.
Ann-Marie Miller is an accredited book and archives conservator based in London, and has run a private workshop, Codex Conservation, for the last 9 years. With her small team she works for a broad range of institutional clients and private collectors from national museums and academic libraries to corporate archives.
