Works of Art on Paper, Books, Documents and Photographs: Techniques and Conservation

IIC's nineteenth international congress took place in Baltimore, Maryland, USA at the invitation of the Washington Conservation Guild, from Sunday 1 September through Friday 6 September 2002.

The subject of the congress was one which we have long neglected – paper in its broadest sense. We meet at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront Hotel, which offered generous reductions on accommodation for delegates.

Papers presented at an IIC congress and published in the contributions undergo a rigorous peer review process. Our Technical Committee on this occasion consisted of Gerhard Banik (Germany), Astrid Brandt (France), Katsuhiko Masuda (Japan), Debra Hess Norris and Abigail Quandt (USA), and Helen Shenton (UK). They reviewed the draft manuscripts and decided on those contributions which would form the lecture programme, as well as the work to be displayed as posters. Here is the list of papers and posters.

The language of the conference and its publications was English.

In addition to the presentations, conference activities included tours of book, paper and photography conservation labs in the Washington area, receptions at the Walters Art Museum and the Library of Congress, and the Congress Dinner. The Dinner was off site: a casual and fun evening is being planned, featuring a band, Baltimore microbrew beers, and traditional Maryland food.
